Difference between Group & Private Yoga session

Practicing YOGA always feels amazing whether it’s a group session or private session or even our own self-practice.

As a yoga instructor, I started my yoga journey with group sessions and slowly with an increase in confidence day by day, I moved on to self-practice and also took private sessions from experts to deepen my knowledge.

On any given day, I do enjoy the group energy. At the same time, I need that individual preference given by an instructor during my private session.

Henceforth, based on our prerequisites we need to decide whether we are ready for group classes or we need to work one to one with a private session

So let’s read through the lens of my clients, about their personal experience and the difference they would like to share about group and private yoga classes.

Client : Vikram Damle, working in a private firm, would love to share his experience on the same topic.

I started taking yoga classes with “LotusSeal” in February 2018, and since then, I have received many questions about the difference between private and group yoga classes. So, I decided to write a blog post to shed some light on this topic.

“Let us first look at group classes.”

Timings of Class

Every yoga teacher will have multiple group classes, so you have the choice to select the timing that works best for you.

(It is a one-hour yoga class, and the timings are between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.)

Category of Class

Basic, Intermediate, and Advance Design of a Yoga Class Every yoga teacher will design her own class.
  • Some classes will offer a different focus for each session, such as Ashtanga yoga, power yoga, Vinyasa flow, strength training, or flexibility training, providing a lot of variety in your practice.
  • Some classes will have a fixed schedule for the first 20 minutes for warm-up and the last 10 minutes for relaxation, with the rest of the class content being decided on a day-to-day basis.
  • Some classes will include one specific advanced asana (such as Shirasana, Hanumanasana, Chakrasana, Sarvangasana, or Halasana) per month so that everyone gets practice and over time, with continuous practice, they can also start performing those poses.
Benefits of Group Yoga Class

In general, group classes have the following benefits:

  • If you are new to yoga and would like to understand what it is all about, you can start your journey with group classes.
  • provide motivation – We all need motivation to start somewhere.
  • Increase confidence – Regular yoga practice builds confidence.
  • Provide a sense of competition – Seeing how other attendees are performing nicely encourages you to do better.
  • Provide constructive collaboration – Practicing yoga with others can create a shared energy and sense of community that can enhance the individual practice of each person in the group.
  • Allow us to learn from each other’s experiences – Seeing how others are performing can inspire and motivate you to do well.
Promote making friends and bonding with the group – You will often meet like-minded people who have similar fitness goals and interests during group yoga classes. “Now let’s take a look at private classes.” Timings of the Class The timings are fully flexible and depend on mutual understanding between the yoga teacher and the participant (Considering different time zones). Category of Class Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Design of a Yoga Class
  • Private yoga classes are one-on-one sessions with a yoga teacher where the teacher can tailor the class to your specific needs and abilities.
  • This means that the teacher can design a practice that is suitable for your level of experience, physical condition, and personal goals.
  • For example, if you have a specific goal in mind, such as improving flexibility or building strength, the teacher can design a practice to help you achieve that goal.
  • If you have a specific health condition, the teacher can also design a practice to help manage or improve it.
Benefits of Private Yoga Class
  • Private yoga classes provide an opportunity for personalised instruction and attention, allowing you to progress at your own pace and get the most out of your practice.
  • The one-on-one attention from the teacher allows for more personalised guidance and support, which can help you deepen your practice and explore new aspects of yoga.
  • Private yoga classes can also be more flexible in terms of scheduling and location, allowing you to practice at a time and place that is convenient for you.
  • Additionally, private sessions can help you develop a deeper connection with your practice and a greater sense of self-awareness and understanding.

Both group and private yoga classes have their own unique benefits. Group classes provide a sense of community and motivation, allowing you to practice with others and learn from their experiences. Group classes can also be more affordable and offer a variety of styles and focuses. On the other hand, private classes provide personalised instruction and attention, allowing you to progress at your own pace and work on specific goals or health conditions. Private classes can also be more flexible in terms of scheduling and location.

The choice between group and private yoga classes depends on your individual needs, preferences, and goals.
